Weidig was a prominent teacher who also taught composer Ruth Crawford Seeger.
Dawson moved to Chicago in 1925 to pursue further study with composer and violinist Adolph Weidig at the American Conservatory of Music. Weidig, the assistant director of the Conservatory, provided Dawson with a scholarship to help with his studies. To further fund his studies and assist with his family’s financial stability, he worked as an editor and arranger for Gamble-Hinged Music Co. and the H.T. FitzSimons Company. He graduated from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago with a Master’s degree in composition in 1927 (Brown, 76; Monroe, 52).
