Tuskegee’s Band playing at Tuskegee’s 25th Anniversary celebration in 1906.
Dawson gravitated toward music from an early age. His mother encouraged his artistic and educational goals, while his father emphasized that he should learn a trade and help support his family. His father secured an apprenticeship for him with local shoemaker E. L. Langston. However, after hearing about the Tuskegee Institute Band from local musicians, including former Tuskegee bandmaster S. W. Gresham, Dawson aspired to attend the school. While awaiting his opportunity, Dawson took lessons from “Professor” Carmichael, a local teacher, for 50 cents a month. He recalled years later that he had to “be back in the house before dark because my father didn’t know that I was doing that” (Malone, 22; Standifer interview; Spady, M1).
