Dawson at Tuskegee in uniform with his trombone.
Dawson embraced Tuskegee’s diverse musical offerings. He took piano from Washington’s niece, Alice Carter Simmons, and also performed as part of the Institute's Choir under Jennie Cheathem Lee. Lee’s conducting manners and skills made a deep impression on Dawson, who would later emulate her careful choral diction in his own work. Dawson also joined the Tuskegee Institute Band as a trombone player and served as a student conductor under its bandmasters, Professor N. Clark Smith and Captain Frank L. Drye (Monroe 33-34; Spady, M1).
