Although Dawson had hoped to next study composition in Ithaca, New York, his father took ill, and his sense of duty to his family convinced him to continue working in order to send money home. His connections from Tuskegee, notably with Major N. Clark Smith, coupled with his successful year conducting at Kansas Vocational College led to a job with the Lincoln High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Dawson inherited the position of Bandmaster and Director of Music from his former professor, Major N. Clark Smith as Smith departed Lincoln High School for a position in Chicago.
