Following graduation from Tuskegee, Dawson became the first bandmaster at Kansas Vocational College in Topeka, Kansas. He borrowed and purchased instruments to put together a 20-piece band during his one-year tenure. He also continued his education, taking his first college courses at Washburn College after being admitted to the school by the Dean of the School of Music, Henry V. Stearns (Monroe, 42).
