Session Five: The Intersection of Concert and Vernacular Traditions.

Archivist Marva Carter uses her discoveries from the Dawson archives to chronicle Dawson's life and work and its relationship to the Tuskegee Institute--and through it, Booker T. Washington. She opens with an account of Dawson's marching behind Washington's hearse, his saving of a flower from Washington's funeral, and his use of a brick from Washington's house in his own chimney--at the center of his home. She continues by outlining the ways in which Washington's teachings and concepts influenced Dawson throughout his career.
