Session Three: The Spirituals: Meaning and Mythology in African American Identity.

Professor Melva Costen talks about the lack of knowledge of the spirituals that she sees in many of her seminarians and the impact of that loss of heritage. "How can we connect an African American identity with a body of spirituals, great as they are," she asks, "when people are not singing them the way we used to sing them?"
