Rabbi Solomon ben Isaac of Troyes (1040-1105), known as Rashi, is the most renowned of the great Jewish scholars and rabbis. He was born in Troyes in the province of Champagne, France, to a family of north Italian origin. His "Chumash-Rashi," the five books of Moses with Rashi's commentary, remains the basis of Torah study today. This book was the first Hebrew book to be published (1495). The type style used in this book was named "Rashi script", and the stamp bears his name written in this distinctive script.
For more information about this stamp, see Stamps of Israel Encylopedia and Catalogue (CD-ROM, SweetChild Software, 1998), article entry for "Rashi."
