| Printed in 1948 (before the end of the British Mandate), these were the first stamps created for the new nation of Israel. Because the Jewish leadership had not yet selected a name for their nation, they read "Doar Ivri" (Hebrew Post) rather than "State of Israel". The stamps depict coins from the wars of the Second Temple and Bar Kochba. These images are particularly appropriate for the time as they symbolized Jewish struggles toward and times of sovereignty. |
